About Us

The Department of Geography of St. John’s College, Agra, was established in 1929, providing facilities for the teaching of Geography. Undergraduate classes were introduced in 1935, and a full-fledged Postgraduate Department was started in 1946. As such, it is the third oldest Postgraduate Geography Department in India, after the departments at Aligarh Muslim University (1931) and Calcutta University (1941).
Over the decades, the department has evolved into a vibrant academic centre distinguished by its commitment to quality teaching, innovative research, and meaningful community engagement. Keeping pace with global academic and technological advancements, the department has integrated Remote Sensing, GIS, and Digital Cartography into its curriculum.
The department’s uniqueness lies in its holistic and interdisciplinary approach, bridging physical and human geography. It seeks to develop a comprehensive understanding of environmental processes, spatial planning, and sustainable development. Regular workshops, field surveys, and academic events form an essential part of its pedagogy.
The Geography Laboratory is equipped for GIS-based analysis, cartographic studies, and data visualization. Modern field instruments, digital teaching aids, and a dedicated departmental library further support both teaching and research activities, ensuring a well-rounded academic environment.
