About the department

The Department of Education established in 2006 for undergraduate programme in teacher – training (B.Ed.) and then after Diploma programme in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed., formerly known as BTC) was started in 2018. The department of education at St. John’s College is an emerging centre of academic excellence committed to quality education, research innovation, and experiential learning. St. John’s College, established in 1850 by the Church Missionary Society of England, holds a distinguished legacy as one of the oldest and most respected educational institutions in North India. It is a government-aided college, NAAC Accredited ‘A’ Grade institution and conferred the status of ‘College with potential `for Excellence’ by UGC, New Delhi.

The department adopts a holistic approach to education by giving equal importance to curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities for the overall development of students. It promotes critical thinking and collaborative learning through a variety of academic activities and also encourages multimedia-enabled teaching and innovative pedagogical practices, including flipped classroom learning. It focuses on nation-building by producing highly competent educators. It envisions cultivating resourceful teachers who shape ethical, resourceful citizens while maintaining a strong connection to Indian culture and quality-driven education.

  • To provide the best campus environment to students and faculty with all facilities to nurture their interests.

Programmes and Courses offered by the department

The Department of Education offers the following programmes and courses for the students:

(a) Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.): Two-Year Undergraduate Programme

(b) Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.): Four-Semester Diploma Programme

Achievements of the department (since its existence)

(a) Research Publications:

The current faculty members have to their credit around 50 research papers published in reputed national and international journals, reflecting their active engagement in frontier areas of educational research.

(b) Conferences, Workshops, and Seminars / Webinars:

The department has consistently promoted a various academic and co-curricular events aimed at fostering research aptitude, critical thinking, and holistic development among students. A few notable initiatives and activities organized by the department are listed below:

  • Organized a National Conference on “New Education Policy 2019: Challenges & Opportunities” held on Feb.,18th, 2020.
  • Successfully organized a National Webinar on “Pedagogical Issues and Challenges of Global E-Learning Scenario & Covid-19” held on June, 18th 2020.

(c) Academic and Co-curricular Activities:

The department organizes a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities throughout the year such as poster-making, singing, fun quizzes, debate and dumb charades to enhance learning, creativity, and collaboration among students. The Department of Education emphasized interactive and learner-centered teaching methods, including group discussions, presentations, micro and macro-teaching and project-based learning. Continuous and comprehensive evaluation was ensured through internal assessments, assignments, practical work, and periodic class tests to effectively monitor and enhance student performance.

  • The teaching-practice (Internship Programme) was conducted on 2025 at St. John’s Inter College, Agra. Through this process, pupil-teachers gained practical exposure and improved their teaching skills.
  • On August 15th, 2025, Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas was commemorated by the department students and expressed their views on the occasion.
  • During the month of October, 2025, department organized awareness initiative on Mission Shakti, wherein faculty members sensitized students through informative speeches.

(d) Students’ Participation & Achievement:

The multifaceted achievement of our students in academic and co-curricular activities recorded bears testimony to the effectiveness of our new endeavors. The Department is known for consistently producing university rank holders and high achievers in the University examinations. The Department successfully organized Cultural events, Plantation, Freshers’ Meet, and Games for the students and distributed trophy and certificate to the winners.  Highlights of few academic and co-curricular activities are as follows:

  • Department of Education showcased its creativity by preparing a Rangoli on the occasion of College Foundation Day held on December, 16, 2025.
  • On November, 14, 2025, a Rangoli Competition was organized on the occasion of National Unity Day, in which students participated enthusiastically.

Voting Awareness Rally

  • Students of Department of Education engaged themselves in the voting awareness rally to spread awareness the importance of voting on 28 Oct. 2021.

Football Match

  • A two day inter college football match organized by DBRAU, Agra held from 3rd to 4th Dec. 2021 at St. John’s College followed by Swagat Geet sung by the Department students.

Fresher / Farewell Celebration

  • Department students celebrate this enjoyable moment together in the department on 15 Dec. 2021. Greeted teachers with tika, garland & gulal.

Foundation Day

  • Foundation Day was celebrated on 16 Dec. Students actively participated in the event and performed various cultural activities & dance followed by National Anthem at the end.

Christmas Celebration

  • Students celebrate the festival of Christmas on the eve by decorating the bulletin board and the classrooms with balloons & other decorating materials.

Annual Athletic Meet

During the Annual Athletic Meet held on 11th-12th, November, 2025, Department of Education secured the Second position in the March Past. Another event was organized by the college from 14th to 15th march 2022 followed by Swagat Geet performed by the students. In this event, position holders are:

  • 400 Relay Race:  Jitendra Kumar B.Ed. I Year held 3rd position
  • High Jump:  Nidhi Kushwah B.Ed. I Year took 1st Position
  • Tug-of-War:  B.Ed. Department stood Second in final round

Poster Making & Plantation Drive

  • This event was organized on the occasion of Earth Day on the Theme: ‘Invest on Planet’ held on 21st & 22nd April 2022. Students participated in poster making competition & also planted various saplings in the college garden.

Friendly Cricket Match

  • A friendly cricket match was organized between students of B.Ed. & D.El.Ed. as an internal activity of the department on 6th December 2021.

Idea Hunt-2021

  • DIET organized an Idea Hunt programme on 11th October 2021 for students of D.El.Ed. in the department on the Topic: ‘Technology Based Study’. They made teaching learning material based on the topic and presented their views over it.

Internship Programme

During B.Ed. session, pupils-teachers are provided with inputs and skill for their practice teaching programme. The purpose of this component of the course, in addition to equipping them with pedagogical skills, is to orient the pupil-teachers to their duties, responsibilities and norms to be followed in their practice teaching schools. The Teacher Educators of the institution engage students in active learning with full involvement. For this purpose, different activities like preparation of observation report based on school practice teaching, scouting-guiding camp, Yoga Camp, and Micro Teaching are conducted in the Department.

In D.El.Ed. Programme every student in each semester complete Internship of 30 working days in Government Primary / Junior Schools. The motive of internship is to provide in hand experience in real situation. Internship makes able the teachers trainee to understand the academic situation school circumstances and problems related to basic education.

Scout-Guide Camp

  • Camp was organized for five days, 15th to 19th March, 2025. Being essential part of B.Ed. 1st year and D.El.Ed. 1st-semester curriculum, students learnt how to prepare food without fire activity, various knots, camping, tent pitching etc.

YOGA Camp

  • Five-day Yoga Camp was organized for B.Ed. 2nd Year students from 15th to 19th March, 2022 in the department of Education. Students participated actively in the event and learnt new Yoga techniques. Yoga Instructor emphasized the importance and role of Yoga in the life and routine schedule of every individual to keep us physically and mentally fit. Everyone should practice the yoga asanas everyday in their hectic life schedule.

(e) Placement Cell

The college has a Placement Cell to help students with their career choices and placements. The cell not only offers career counselling services to the students but also helps in developing skills that employers look for by conducting training workshops. Numerous employers participate in on-campus presentations, talks and workshops. Campus recruitment workshops and interviews are organized to help the students find placements in Government schools, private schools and various other sectors and organizations of repute. Students are prepared in the following areas-.

  • Tutorials- for the preparation of UPTET/CTET/NET
  • English Aptitude Training/Test
  • Resume Preparations
