About the department
The department of Psychology has always played an important role in college life and earned recognition. Late. Prof. Eric Drew who served the department and donated his entire book collection. Further, the department advanced under Rev. Canon T.D. Sully’s guidance who also served as Vice-Principal (1933-48) and Principal (1954-55).
A major turning point came when Prof. Mark (1916) established the laboratory of Experimental Psychology modeled on Cambridge University, England. This made the College a pioneer, setting up one of the earliest well-equipped Psychology Lab in India, Prof. Adinarayan also played a key role in its early development. In 1943 Prof. Hakim focused on building the advanced Experimental Psychology Laboratory. The department was expanded by adding new instruments, apparatuses, books and devised his own tests also.
By the efforts of Prof. M. A. Hakim in 1952 the department of Psychology was separated from the department of Philosophy in the University of Agra. In 1954 the college launched the first Post graduate classes in Psychology in the University of Agra. Since that time the department has evolved well-structured academic courses and vibrant learning programs. Currently, the department has four permanent faculty members.
The introduction of the Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology program in 1997 enabled advanced learning among students with professional skills, enhanced research activities and strengthened the potential of the department.
The Department of Psychology strives:
- To equip students with rigorous practical and theoretical principles, as well as sound ethical, professional, and research skills, to enable them to become effective and competent psychologists.
- To prepare them for the challenges in the world, we offer a blend of theory, science and practice, resulting in graduates who have the knowledge, skills and values to be effective personal/ social change agents in community and society.
- To be a leading national center of excellence for psychological research and studies.
- To work together with government and non-government organizations to expand students’ experiences.

(a) Minor Research Project

(d) Conferences, Workshops, and Seminars/ Webinars:
The department constantly organizes conferences, workshops, and seminars/ webinars, lectures etc. to promote academic exchange, research collaboration and student exposure to emerging areas. These events aligned with the department’s objective of fostering innovation and interdisciplinary learning. Some of them are as follows:
- Second Conference of Council of Behavioural Scientist, Oct 17-19 2002.
- National Workshop on Behaviour Modification Techniques on 23rd & 24th January 2004.
- National Conference on ‘Challenges and Opportunities of Work Ethics in Nation Building’ was organized on 4th to 6th October 2012.
- A series of Remedial teaching in Statistics was conducted from 23rd to July to 30 September 2019.
- A lecture on Personality development was organized by the department on 20th September 2019.
- A Seminar on Career counselling was organized on 26.11.2019.
- Sessions on marital counselling for MA (final) students were delivered from 19th to 21st November 2019.
- Career talk was organized by the department on 26.11.2019.
- A Lecture was organized by the department on the theme Mental Health ‘Optimism and Happiness’ on 2-12 2019.
- A series of lectures on Mental Health were organized by the department from 30th November to 5th December 2019.
- Lectures on development of soft skills were organized from 6-12-19 to 20-1 2020.
- The department also organized a workshop on ‘Orientation to Personality Theories’ and introduced a certificate course in personality theories.
- During Covid-19 pandemic time, the department organized a series of webinars on the theme “Optimizing well-being”. A weekly program started from 16th April 2020 and continued till 17th August 2020, comprising 16 episodes.
- A lecture was organized by the department on the topic entitled “Physical Health (gynecological issue) for female students” on 2nd March 2021.
- The department organized a talk on World Mental Health Day with the theme “Make Mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority.” The eminent speaker Prof. S. P. Singh gave an insightful talk.
- A lecture was delivered on 3rd December 2022 by Dr. Ashutosh Department of Psychiatry, S.N. Medical College Agra on ‘International Day of People with Disabilities’.
- A motivational talk by Prof. Ajit Kumar Jain, S. V. College, Aligarh was organized on 14-12-22.
- On The International Day of Persons with Disabilities 5th December 2023, Dr. Athira Senior resident IMHH, Agra discussed the rights, status and well-being of people suffering from mental and physical disabilities.
- The department organized a one-day workshop on “Know your IQ” on 13th March 2024 and measured the IQ of approximately 90 college students and faculty members.
- A lecture for awareness and prevention of suicide was delivered by Prof. Vishal Sinha Head of the Psychiatry Department, S.N. Medical College Agra on 11th September 2024.
- Lecture on Awareness and Importance of Mental Health was delivered by Dr. Vipin Agarwal on 8th October 2024.
- The department celebrated International Women’s Day for awareness on the importance of women empowerment on 9th March 2025.
- On World Autism Day the department organized an awareness program by inviting Mrs. Renu on 2nd April 25.
- Interdisciplinary interaction between the department of Zoology and Psychology on 19th August 2025.
- In collaboration with Medha Foundation A Career Talk was organized on 9th September 2025.
- An awareness program was organized on World Suicide Prevention Day 10-9-25 by Dr. Satyadhar Devedi, Clinical Psychologist at IMHH, Agra.
- The Women Empowerment Program under Mission Shakti was organized on 10th November 25.
- A workshop on Personality Development with Training and placement cell was organized by the department on 17th November 2025.
- An awareness program on Women Empowerment was organized on 9-3-26.
- The department observed World Autism Day by the students of post-graduation enacting skits for the awareness among college students on 2nd April 26
(e) Student’s Activities:
With a vision to equip students with tools and techniques to become aware of self and to enhance their understanding of others and as a legacy a promise to safeguard the students from falling into consistent pressures and challenges the Department has organized many student-oriented programmes, such as debates, poster making, speech competitions, skits, storytelling, salad making competition, nukkad natak etc.
Some visits are planned to enhance experiential knowledge of students:
- Educational trips for Post graduation students are arranged to Institute of Mental Health and Hospital, Agar.
- To foster research interest and facilitate keen observation students of BA (Vl-Sem), and MA. visited slum areas of Agra and conducted some psychological tests and prepared a survey report.
- For exploration and orientation every year an educational trip for the post-graduation students is being organized by the department.
(f) Student’s Achievements:
Students of the Department of Psychology are constantly achieving academic milestones and proving their excellence in diverse fields. Some students have secured the top position at university level. Many have successfully qualified national level examinations such as Gate, Net, JRF, CDS, joined the Indian Army and secured good ranks in prestigious institutions as well. The Psychology Association has been actively functioning.
