About the department
History of Sports in St. John’s College, Agra
Sports and physical education have always been an integral part of student life at St. John’s College Agra. The college has consistently encouraged students to participate in games, athletics, and fitness activities for the development of discipline, leadership, teamwork, and physical well-being.
The college possesses spacious playgrounds and facilities for various outdoor and indoor games such as cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, athletics, kho-kho, kabaddi, and other sports activities. Over the years, students of the college have actively participated in inter-college, university, and state-level competitions.
The Department of Physical Education has played a significant role in promoting sports culture within the institution through tournaments, annual sports meet, orientation programmes, fitness activities, and inter-class competitions.
A Brief History of the Department
The Department of physical Education and sports was started in the year 1976. The department has been active since its inception in promoting physical activity and sports. It has always played a key role in organizing sports activities and tournaments. Sri. S. K. Sharma has served the department from 1976 till his superannuation in 2016.
St. John’s College, an institution bestowed with the status of “College with Potential for Excellence” has excelled in the areas of academic and co-curricular activities alike, including sports. A sport has been given prime attention to prepare the youth as dynamic individuals with a healthy mind and healthy body. With our proactive approach towards sports, the College could bring forth some of the best sporting talents such as
- Shamshare Singh, who represented India in Hockey (1980-83).
- Antu Fransis (1982-85) who shone in Basketball at the National Level.  Â
- Hemanshu Mitthal represented India in shooting in the year 2013 – 14.
- Mayank Patak represented India in Asian air gun championship and got bronze in the year 2014-15.
- Amit Chaturwedi played vizzy trophy (Cricket) in the year 2010-11, 2011-12.
Under the guidance of the Physical Education Department, students have participated in numerous activities including:
- Inter-class competitions
- Kho-Kho and Kabaddi tournaments
- Badminton competitions
- Athletic events
- Cycle Rally from Agra to Mathura
- Fitness and recreational programmes
The college continues to uphold a strong sporting tradition by motivating students towards excellence in physical education and competitive sports along with academic achievement.

The Department of Physical Education envisions promoting excellence in physical education and sports by developing physically fit, mentally strong, disciplined, and socially responsible individuals. The department aims to create awareness about health, fitness, sportsmanship, and holistic development through quality education, training, research, and participation in sports and physical activities at regional, national, and international levels.
Mission:
To promote physical fitness, sportsmanship, discipline, and holistic development through quality education, training, sports participation, and healthy lifestyle practices while preparing skilled and responsible professionals in the field of physical education and sports.
Achievements of the department (since its existence)
(a) Sports Achievements (2016–2025)
The Department of Physical Education and Sports of St. John’s College has achieved remarkable success in various inter-college tournaments and championships over the years. The students have consistently demonstrated excellence in team as well as individual sports.
Major Achievements
- Football (Men) secured the Winner Trophy five times during the period 2016–2025 and achieved the position of Runner-Up in 2025.
- Table Tennis (Women) emerged as Champions five consecutive times from 2021 to 2025.
- Chess (Women) won championships four consecutive times from 2021 to 2024.
- Chess (Men) secured the Winner title three consecutive times from 2022 to 2024.
- Volleyball (Women) became Champions twice in 2022 and 2024, while also achieving the position of Runner-Up in 2023 and 2025.
- Volleyball (Men) secured the Runner-Up position in 2025.
- Netball (Women) achieved the Runner-Up position in 2024 and 2025.
- The college team secured Runner-Up in Handball in 2023.
- The students also brought laurels to the institution by securing Winner positions in Shooting, Wushu, Swimming, Karate, and Taekwondo during 2023 and 2024.
- Kabaddi (Men) secured the Winner Trophy in 2024.
- Kabaddi (Women) and Kho –Kho (Women) secured the Winner Trophy in 2025
- Yoga and Mallakhambh (Men) secured first position in 2025.
These accomplishments reflect the dedication, discipline, and sporting spirit of the students and the continuous encouragement provided by the Department of Physical Education and Sports.
(b) Student’s achievements:
- Mayank Pathak won a bronze medal at the Asian Shooting Championship in 2014.
- Deeksha bagged bronze medal in Nation Games (Event: Gymnastics) in 2023.
- Kumkum Choudhary won bronze medal in All Indian University Wushu Championship (Women) in 2023.
