Department of Statistics
About the department
The Department of Statistics was established in 1966 with under-graduate classes and later in 1986, the department earned affiliation for post-graduate classes. For last 39 years Department has been recognized also as research centre.
The department also runs the Department of Computer Science (established in 1996) having approximately 250+ undergraduate students every year. The department has a working computer centre with 30+ computer systems. The department is gaining popularity as the number of students is increasing every year.
The entire teaching faculty is well qualified having Ph.D. and experience in teaching and research. All the teachers have written text books/monographs/research papers published by reputed publishers.
Central to its mission, the department prioritizes instilling not only subject knowledge but also moral and ethical values in its students. It actively supports both current students and alumni in their pursuit of career opportunities, maintaining social media groups to facilitate jobs and placement information dissemination

To be recognized as centre of excellence in statistical education and research by producing and empowering a generation of statisticians who transform raw data into actionable insights for the betterment of humanity and society.
Mission:
To equip students with advanced statistical methodologies by bridging the gap between theoretical statistics and emerging data science technologies. Also to cultivate critical thinking and logical reasoning skills in every student by delivering a curriculum that responds to the evolving present needs.
Programmes and Courses offered by the department
As per National Education Policy (NEP-2020), the Department of Statistics offers the following programmes under CBCS system:
· Undergraduate:
B.Sc. with Statistics
B.Sc. (Honours) in Statistics,
B.Sc. (Research) in Statistics
· Postgraduate: M.Sc. in Statistics
· Ph.D.: (Area of Interests: Sampling Theory, Statistical Inference, Distribution Theory, Demography, Agricultural Statistics, Applied Statistics)
Teaching and Evaluation:
The department has reputation of meaningful and intensive teaching. The students are continuously evaluated through class tests/class-room exercises, assignments etc. Department have been equipped with computers and smart classes to enrich teaching method. Most of the teaching is done through regular lecture method by using traditional chalk-blackboard, smart class and projector. The staff also uses case studies, online quizzes and field studies to supplement the theoretical knowledge of the subject.
The educationally disadvantaged students are helped at individual level by teachers through counseling and guidance while the advanced learners are challenged to work ahead through experimental projects and seminars at postgraduate level.
The department has an students association which encourage the students to participate in Quiz contests, debates, Essay Competition etc. The students are encouraged to provide feedback formally and informally to the teaching staff and their valuable suggestions are taken care of.
The department has its own library with more than 800 books and other teaching and research material.
Research Activity:
Research is one of the important area of academic activities of the departments. All the teachers are actively engaged in the academic researches and co-curricular activities. More than 150 research papers, 10 books/chapters have already been published. Two minor projects funded by UGC were completed. More than 50 research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree and presently 10 research scholars are registered for the Ph.D. Programme. All the PG students submit their respective Dissertation/Survey Report/Research Report at the end of session.
Alumni Association:
Department has an Alumni Association. This association conducts various programmes time to time. It also honours meritorious students by giving prizes and encourages them by providing career guidance. Many co-curricular activities are also organized. They organize meet of old student and interact with the present students.
Achievements of the department (since its existence)
(A) Faculty Members Achievements:
The members of Teaching Staff are nominated on the Board of Studies, Academic Council and Faculty of the University and they contribute in the curriculum design of the University.
(B) Conferences, Workshops, and Seminars/Webinars:
- The Department has organized two training programmes in Statistics for Research Scholars and Teachers of Social Science subjects of Ten Days duration each, in the sessions 2003-2004 & 2004-2005. The programme was funded by ICSSR, New Delhi.
- Organised One Day Workshop on “Data Analysis Using SPSS” on 16.10.2017.
- Organised One Day National Webinar on “Impact of Sampling and Non-sampling Errors on Survey Studies” on May 18, 2020.
- Organised Two Days Workshop “Sample Size Determination Using G-power Software” on May 23-24, 2020.
- Conducted Alumni Meet-2022 (UDGAM) on 13th August, 2022. More than 75 alumni participated in this meet. In the beginning, Tree Plantation in the memory of Late Dr. Rajeev Agnihotri, Head, Department of Statistics was organised. Later, the alumni shared their views with each other.
- Organised a Two days Financial Education Training Programme for Young Citizens on 27th and 28th Feb., 2023 in collaboration with National Institute of Securities Market (NISM) (An Educational Initiative of SEBI). Resource person was Dr. Nawabuddin, NISM.
- Conducted jointly with Department of Economics a one-hour special lecture on the topic Prosperity Through Cooperation under Awareness Programme on Cooperative on 16.03.2023. Resource person was Dr. Girish Mangleek, Associate Professor, VAMNICOM, Pune.
